Post-Surgery Recovery · Any surgery

However it healed, you should still be dressed by 9am.

Cardiac and sternal, abdominal, and every other recovery — different surgeries, the same first weeks. You can't lift, can't reach overhead, can't bend, can't put pressure on the incision. This is the page for any surgery — especially cardiac, abdominal, and general recovery. (Having shoulder or hip & knee surgery? We built dedicated pages for those.) The surgery was your surgeon's job. The next six weeks of mornings are ours. Built from what hundreds of recovering patients told us they actually needed at home.

Week 2: what changed
What the first weeks actually feel like

Nobody warns you about the second morning.

The block wears off. The arm is in a sling, or the sternum is healing, or the hip can't bend, or the incision won't take a waistband — and suddenly every shirt and every pair of pants you own needs a body that works the way it did last week. We built clothing for the body you'll have this week.

You won't be able to lift your arms overhead for weeks. Front-open and shoulder-snap isn't a preference — it becomes a daily necessity for shoulder, cardiac, and chest surgery.
After hip or knee surgery, bending past 90° is off-limits. Reaching your own feet to pull pants up is exactly what you've been told not to do. Side-zip pants dress you from a chair instead.
A waistband on a fresh abdominal incision is unthinkable. Hysterectomy, hernia, C-section, DIEP flap — the cut runs right where every waistband lands. Soft waists sit above or below it.
The strongest people find asking for help the hardest. Needing a hand with a shirt every morning, after a lifetime of needing none. Dressing yourself, quietly, hands that independence back to you.
Set it up before your date. Front-open tops and side-zip pants waiting at home beat hunting for clothes that fit around a fresh incision on the second morning.
Before your date

What's getting in the way of dressing yourself?

Every surgery is different. Each card below points you toward the right pieces for your situation.

Dressing without lifting or reaching
After shoulder, cardiac, and chest surgery you can't raise your arms overhead for 4–6 weeks. Shoulder-snap and front-open tops open completely flat — you slip one arm in at a time, from the waist up, one hand, no overhead reach.
Best fit: shoulder-snap tees, front-snap recovery tops
Sternal precautions, kept intact
Open-heart, bypass, and valve patients are told: no pushing, pulling, or lifting — which quietly includes pulling a shirt overhead. Full-front zips and snaps let you dress with arms low and close, no load on the breastbone.
Best fit: front-zip cardigans, front-snap tops
Getting dressed without bending
After hip and knee replacement, bending past 90° and reaching your feet is off-limits. Side-zip and tearaway pants open flat — guide the leg in, zip the side, never bend. They also clear braces and ice wraps.
Best fit: side-zip recovery pants, side-open shorts
Soft fabric on healing incisions
Seams, bands, and tight closures feel different on a fresh incision. Our modal and cotton blends are selected for post-surgical skin — soft seams, non-binding waists, and nothing that presses where it shouldn't.
Best fit: soft-waist bottoms, modal-blend tops, recovery robes

SO MUCH EASIER to put on and take off — a Godsend after surgery!! My husband wore this shirt 24 hours a day for several weeks.

Why it matters

What we built — and why

01
You won't lift your arms overhead. Front-open and shoulder snaps make that fine.

Shoulder, cardiac, and chest patients are told to keep the arms low for weeks. Our shoulder seams and front closures open completely flat — the top goes on around the operated arm or the healing sternum, one arm at a time, from the waist up. No raising, no reaching, no help required.

Soft, very comfortable, and easy to put on while recovering from shoulder surgery. The only shirt I could find that snapped open on both the shoulder and the side. I now have five.
Margaret C. — Total Shoulder Arthroplasty
4–6
weeks most patients are advised to avoid raising the arms above shoulder height after shoulder, cardiac, or chest surgery
Front-snap recovery top — opens flat, dresses one arm at a time, zero overhead reach

You can't bend past 90°. The pants come to you instead.

After hip and knee replacement, reaching your feet and pulling up a waistband is exactly what you've been told not to do. Side-zip and tearaway bottoms open completely flat — guide the leg in from a chair, zip the side, stand up. The precaution stays unbroken because the pants never ask you to break it, and the same opening clears braces and lets PT reach the joint.

I had a total right hip replacement and these worked very well leaving the hospital. It was so easy to get dressed — and my therapist could reach the joint without me undressing.
Randy P. — Total Hip Replacement
90°
the bend limit most hip-replacement patients come home with — side-zip pants dress you without ever testing it
Side-zip recovery pants — sides open flat over dressings, braces, and ice wraps

Nothing presses on the incision. Soft waists and the seatbelt pillow do the rest.

A standard waistband lands right on an abdominal incision; a seatbelt crosses straight over a healing sternum on the drive home. Our soft, wide waists sit above or below the cut, every layer is compression-free, and the shield pillow tucks between the strap and the incision — the single item nurses ask patients where to buy.

Really great following surgery — in my case for a defibrillator. It attaches easily to the seatbelt. So much better than using a small towel. The nurses said they wish everyone would bring these.

Independence
You dress yourself — quietly, before anyone has to be asked.
One hand, from the waist up, no overhead reach, no deep bend. The strongest people find asking for help the hardest; front-open garments hand that back on day one, every morning.
Easy to put on and take off without moving the injured arm. — Ann C., Post-Surgery Recovery
Clinic-ready
PT and incision checks happen without you undressing.
Side and shoulder snaps open for your therapist to reach the joint; front-open tops keep dressings reachable and drains managed. You stay dressed in the waiting room and on the drive there.
